I was always curious if it's possible to import a car into North America legally without ever wanting to register or plate it. Say you want to import a car for a collection that will sit in a museum and never be driven or be driven only at a track.

I still think the 25 year law is total bullshit. In Canada it's only 15. However I really feel any car should be allowed to be imported. If it's good enough for European, Japanese, or Korean safety standards then it's good enough for me. Our safety laws need a total overhaul. Things like color and shape of lights shouldn't be preventing cars from being sold in our country in the first place.

Could they at least part it before scrapping the shell? Use the potential money to...oh, I dunno, HELP IMPROVE THE COMMUNITY?!

I get the point of scrapping a very nice car but it's a very wasteful method, especially in an era where the public is highly critical of government budget wasting.

You can import whatever car and year you want - so long as it's off-road use only: AKA track use or anything else not deemed a public road.
The catch? You can't ever insure it for road use EVER if you import it as such.

At least that's the catch in Canada.

The media event aimed to highlight a partnership between the United States and United Kingdom to block imports that fail U.S. safety standards.

FUCK THAT SHIT. There's cars on the road RIGHT NOW that don't meet current U.S. safety standards. They're called " EVERYTHING OLDER THAN 10 YEARS OLD "

We MUST protect the American citizens from themselves! Letting them choosing what they want to drive out of their own free will is letting the terrorists win!

A new campaign has been announced to seize and crush every automobile older than 2004 model year. You will not be compensated for this, we're doing it for your own good.

I really need to get a Government job. Seriously, people are being paid really good money with great retirement plans to find and crush these vehicles. Vehicles that are no more of a threat to public safety or the environment than the ghetto rigs doing 80 rolling on a donut with no exhaust down I80..

Look up "Show and Display" importations. Doable, but pricey, and very strict mileage restrictions once in-country.

Aww, I'm sorry bb. But don't worry, it wasn't too classic. It was a 2000 with an '88 VIN

Import one without an engine as car parts and ship the engine separate. Put it back together in your garage.

They've been doing this for years.

My question is: What would the feds do if the car was actually 1988, and wore a 1974 VIN?

Asking for a friend.

Here, in (my part of) Europe, we've got a 0 year rule. You can import anything, as long as it conforms to the legislation of a respectable country like Japan or the US. Some changes have to be made, mostly in lighting as US spec lights won't do, but all of that is relatively minor. The car does have to pass a safety inspection, but that doesn't involve a crash test.

Kinja'd!!! Dsscats > McMike
12/12/2014 at 11:53

It was actually a 2000 and wore an 88 VIN. Either way, swapping the VIN is a federal offence.

A lot of the time, when people say 'classic Mini', they're just differentiating between the original cars and BMW's MINIs. I'd love to own an original Mini, too - though, in my case, it's more of a money issue than a location problem - and I don't really care what year it's from, provided it's pre-2001.

The prices seem to be going down. There's a mint 68 (?) For $10k

Kinja'd!!! KirkyV > Dsscats
12/12/2014 at 14:13

Kinja'd!!!0

It's a perspective thing. When I was growing up, MInis were so cheap that, frequently, it was easier to just buy a slightly junky second example for the sake of parts to keep your first Mini running, than to source parts individually. They were incredibly disposable cars.

These days, it's at least £4,000 for an okay-ish example, and I just struggle to reconcile that they were so much cheaper, such a relatively short amount of time ago. I could have a good EP3 Civic Type R or a really, really good 205 GTi, for that kind of money.

It's also America. There were much fewer USDM models, so all the UKDM ones are getting imported. This now extends to the 88s which have air con...

The worst thing in my mind about all this "we're doing this to keep people safe" BS is that any American at the age of 16 can own, drive and kill them selves on a motorcycle. But if you want to drive a car that might be "dangerous" that's a crime.

it's the same BS reason we don't have/won't ever have Kei cars. HOW IS A KEI CAR MORE DANGEROUS THAN A 1300CC HARLEY????
